Dual Certification Summer 2 Overview

For all graduate students in the Dual Certification program, you can expect the following during Summer 2. Below includes important information about your Summer 2019 coursework details, including schedule and deadlines. Each course has a daily assessment that is linked to the content covered in the in-person class.

Note: If you are a Teach For America Corp member, you will be required to take an additional online data collection course.

Summer II Overview for all Dual Certification Students

  • Week 1: TEL-501: Foundations in Teaching Exceptional Learners
  • Week 1: SGA-303: Inquiries into Culturally Responsive Practices for Special Educators
  • Week 2: TEL-502: Assessing the Whole Learner  (**This is a prerequisite)
    • Each course has a daily assessment that is linked to the content covered in the in-person class. Together, these daily assessments combine with the final, due at the end of the week, to form an overall course grade; The final is a combination of the daily assessments and the feedback you receive from your professor.
    • The pre-requisite course indicated above must be passed in order to enroll in the fall term
    • In addition, there are two online-only courses: 1 for your TEL coursework and 1 for your MAT Coursework that can be completed at any point in the summer. They are both due on August 13, 2019. They are:
      • TEL-503: Profiles of Exceptional Learners I: Low-Incidence Disabilities and Gifted Learners
      • SGA-303: Inquiries into Culturally Responsive Practices for Special Educators

General Education Summer 2 Overview


Summer II is a full term of work and having this time allows you to accumulate credits that you need to obtain your Master's and New York State Certification within 2 years. We have intentionally offered several different scheduling options to accommodate for Summer work, travel, and personal obligations.

This summer, you will engage in general pedagogy coursework designed to support your development in culturally responsive instruction. You will consider scholarly frameworks that provide multiple approaches and mindsets to promote a classroom where students feel both valued and represented. You will then have the opportunity to apply these learnings to create a comprehensive unit plan within your subject area that includes specific culturally responsive approaches. Additionally, you will engage in methods coursework that is tailored specifically to build knowledge in your content major. Your summer coursework includes one week of in-person coursework and as well as asynchronous online coursework throughout the summer term.

You should have received an email to sign up for your Summer 2019 classes at Relay Graduate School of Education. The following is important information in regards to your Summer coursework enrollment at Relay. Below you will find the dates for the in-person Summer options. Please review this in its entirety.

What are the key dates for registration?

Registration opens on: Monday, March 4th at 5:00 PM (EST)

Registration closes on: Friday, March 22nd at 11:59 PM (EST)

Switch Requests close on: Friday, May 31st at 9:00 AM (EST)

Bursar Holds must be removed for Summer enrollment eligibility by: Monday, June 10th at 11:59 PM (EST)

When can I register?

Before completing registration available starting on Monday, March 4th, please take into account all of your professional and personal summer commitments. Registration will remain open for Class of 2020 graduate students for approximately three weeks. Registration will close on Friday, March 22nd at 11:59 PM (EST). Any non-respondents will be assigned an open week. To complete your registration, please reference the email sent to students on Monday, March 4th at 5:00 PM (EST). If you did not receive the registration email, please reach out to support@relay.edu.

Confirmation emails will be sent to students by the end of March 2019 confirming their registration.

Is my registration guaranteed?

Registration is not guaranteed if a Bursar or Certification Hold is placed on your account. If you have a hold, it must be removed by Monday, June 10th in order to remain enrolled in your Summer courses. For more information regarding holds, please review this Relay Support Center article.



What is the Switch Policy?

In the unlikely event that you need to reschedule your registration, all switch requests should be submitted by Friday, May 31st at 9 AM (EST). Given all weeks have set capacities, it is best to finalize your registration as early as possible.

General MAT Program: Switch requests are honored on a first come, first served basis. Students are limited to only one switch request. After registering for your in-person class sessions, you may request to switch your registration here.

Dual Certification Program: After registering for you in-person class sessions, you may switch your registration dates using the confirmation email that is sent directly to you after confirming your original registration.

Is there a Waitlist Policy?

There will not be a waitlist for Summer II courses. Please register for the best available option to solidify your in-person session dates and times.

What is the Attendance Policy?

What should I bring to my classes?

Please bring your charged laptop, charger, and your State ID. All students will be given access to Wi-Fi.
